PAREIDOLIA
Design Research
2019

An exploration into the psychological phenomenon that causes people to see patterns in a random stimulus. In summary; this often leads to people assigning human characteristics to everyday objects. This form of apophenia is quite common and for the purpose of this exploration I focused on visual output rather than aural perception; utilising the Arnold renderer and volume.

Unlike using a Rorschach inkblot test to discover human underlying emotions these visuals allow the user to freely view and take in what they can see.

“YOU CAN SEE VARIOUS BATTLES AND LIVELY POSTURES OF STRANGE FIGURES, EXPRESSIONS ON FACES, COSTUMES AND AN INFINITE NUMBER OF THINGS, WHICH YOU CAN REDUCE TO GOOD INTEGRATED FORM” Leonardo da Vinci
